How to Become a Barrister from Pakistan

To become a barrister of England and Wales from Pakistan you need three things in order: a law degree that covers the academic part of Bar training, membership of one of the four Inns of Court, and the Bar training and assessments. The University of London LLB, which you can study in Lahore, covers the first step: the University says it includes the seven foundations of legal knowledge required for the academic part of training for intending barristers.

The University of London LLB covers Contract, Criminal, Equity and Trusts, EU, Property, Public and Tort law, the seven foundation subjects. It takes three years, or two with a prior degree, and you can study it at Blackstone in Lahore.

Every intending barrister must join one of the four Inns of Court in London: Lincoln's Inn, Gray's Inn, Inner Temple or Middle Temple. Blackstone's faculty include barristers called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn.

After the degree you complete the vocational Bar training and its assessments, then the work-based training set by the Bar Standards Board, which regulates barristers in England and Wales. Check the Bar Standards Board's current requirements before you plan this stage, as they can change.

Rules on which law degrees can be used to practise in Pakistan are set by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the Pakistan Bar Council, and they can change. Before you enrol, confirm the current position for your intake with HEC and the Bar Council. The University of London gives the same advice: check with the regulator where you want to practise, and get the answer in writing, before you apply.
